Based on the remarkable life of iconic French singer, poet, writer and actor Serge Gainsbourg, the film is a surreal and evoctive record of Gainsbourg's meagre beginnings in a Jewish family coping under Nazi rule in World War II, through his popularity as the enfant terrible of 50s and 60s French media to notoriety in the 70s and 80s.

The special makeup FX have been created by creature shop DDT Efectos Especiales of Barcelona, Spain, the Oscar™-winning team that brought alive the fantastic creatures of the multi-award-winning El Laberinto del Fauno. Doug is delighted to be once more working with David Marti, Montse Ribe and the talented artists of one of the world's greatest FX teams. Cameras rolled on Doug in Paris on January 20th, 2009 and continued until the end of April, 2009.

Universal Pictures International Studio is co-producing with Studio 37, the production banner of French telco giant Orange. One World Films’ Marc du Pontavice and Didier Lupfer are producing, with Sfar also penning the screenplay.

Joann Sfar's cutting-edge creativity and unique take on the character of Serge Gainsbourg is what really drew us to this project, said Universal Pictures International Studio president Christian Grass. Universal will retain French theatrical and home video rights to the project. Studio 37 gets the international rights, which will be handled by Kinology.

The film was released in France on 20th January, 2010 to huge acclaim from audiences and critics.

Doug left a message for fans on The Doug Jones Experience just as cameras rolled on him in Paris.

I can finally tell you what I'm doing here in Paris, France!  Well, sort of.  Tuesday, January 20th marks my first day filming in the highly anticipated biography picture about the life of French iconic singer/songwriter Serge Gainsbourg titled SERGE GAINSBOURG: Vie Héroïque (A Heroic Life), in a production relationship with One World Films and my beloved Universal Pictures (who has been so good to me over the years with such movies as Mystery Men, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Doom, and of course Hellboy II: The Golden Army).  Directed by celebrated comic book writer/artist Joann Sfar.  Click on the link to my Filmography page on Serge to see the rest of the cast, and related news.

I am here in Paris until the end of April performing a role in the film that I am not allowed to talk about, unfortunately.  I know, so not fair.  But I can tell you it involves a stunning prosthetic make-up, created and applied by my Oscar-winning team from Pan's Labyrinth -- DDT Efectos Especiales from Spain.  I know what you're thinking ... "a prosthetic make-up in a bio pic?"  You're just going to need to trust me here.  All will be revealed in due time.  This movie is different than anything I've done, and I am tickled pink to be working in the French cinema with all its history and artistic license.

This is in the French language, and I am the only American actor in it, spending lots of pre-production time working with a piano coach and a French language coach to help me with my dialogue ... remember Pan's Labyrinth in Spanish?  I feel like I'm getting my PHD in foreign film acting.  Talk about a challenge.  My little head hurts.

I hope to be blogging, but may have to wait a smidge to put up all of it, as I can't let specific movie news out just yet.

Thank you for your patience, and for all your support!  I see every one of you in the lens of the camera, and it gives me the energy I need to finish the day.  God Bless You.
